morning classes
You will normally be taught by your class teacher every morning. This teacher is responsible for planning the main part of your course at the school. Every week, you will spend some time discussing your progress with your class teacher in a tutorial. Your class teacher will also discuss the programme of your course with other teachers who take your class, as well as with the Academic Manager.
You will have a second teacher for part of most mornings to provide a change of pace and activity.
afternoon classes
The afternoon programme includes the following types of class:
exam skills: These classes focus on the skills needed to take examinations in English. The exams we usually focus on are the IELTS and for the Cambridge English exams (for example the First Certificate). Everyone takes this class, even if they are not planning to take an exam in English yet.
exam practice: Thse classes are for students who are enrolled to take an English exam very soon. You will practice the kinds of questions in the exam.
project classes: In these classes, you will work as a team on some kind of project. This may be a problem-solving activity, information gathering, a creative endeavour, or some other project in which you have to use your English together. At the end of the week, you will present your project to other students and staff. maybe as a powerpoint presentation, maybe in writing, maybe as a piece of video.
Friday Afternoon: There are no classes on Friday afternoon. The school will be open and you can use the library, digital language laboratory or the computers.
what happens in your class
You will have many different types of lessons. We aim to help you to improve in all aspects of English: speaking, reading, writing, listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, etc. Speaking and listening are the most important. You will listen to recordings, talk to your teachers and to each other, study from books, talk about videos, and use the language laboratory and computers. Although grammar rules and vocabulary are important, you will not spend all your time learning them: we think it is most important that you can use the English language, and merely learning the rules does not always help you to do this.
homework
Your class teacher usually gives you some written work each day. This is an important part of your course, and you should spend between 1 and 2 hours on it. If you like, you can study in the school until 5.30 in the afternoon.
